Moment of Glory

STANDARD CHARTERED KL MARATHON 2010

This is my first Standard Chartered KL Marathon after the Penang Bridge International Marathon and the 4th Half Marathon I had involved since 2006. I never think of joining this event as it is considered too far for me to get to KL, anyhow, I have completed the run and eager to return next year. Why ? Because the feeling of running in a big city is totally different from Penang and I enjoyed it very much.

We (Kimura, Puah PA, Lim See Tong and me) departed from Penang at 8am together with few Seagate friends on 26/6/2010 and reached KL Titiwangsa Lake Garden Stadium at about 1pm to collect our running kits and later proceeded to our accommodation (KL Plaza) in Bukit Bintang (Luckily Puah san brought GPS which help us a lot). Having our lunch in Pavillion at 3pm (eau ka be hing lio) and only did a window shopping (Bo pan huat, bo lui ma). Dinner at Overseas restaurant followed by exploring Sungei Wang Plaza area (Bukit Bintang Landmark). One thing very interesting happen here is the watch price bargained by Kimura san, the price was started from RM120 until the guy want to sell at RM10 but finally we decided not to buy. Reason – The watch boleh tahan ka. Next mission was watching World Cup between Korea and Paraguay. Unfortunately, I only able to watch first half as my eye already tak boleh tahan anymore.

Waked up at 4.25am for preparation and taken 2 bananas as the energy booster for my Half Marathon run. Even though the event sponsor provided a free power bar but I still preferred bananas as it is more easy to swallow. Ai ya , rain at the wrong time but kamsiah thi kong just a very small rain, packed 6 persons in a Taxi like sardine to the starting point and some more the taxi driver want to showed off to the traffic police by stopping in front of 2 police men. The rain stopped before the flag off time but I still worry the wet road will cause my shock wet and potential of generating blister on my foot.

We were gunned off at 6.15am sharp with a very good weather condition. At beginning stage, you can felt the water splash on to your foot. Bo kuan e ne ce lio, tam pun tam la, jio chao to si lio. The first 5 to 6 km road seems to be a bit steep and I can felt the pain at my leg muscle. The road elevation published by organizer in the website kua kuan em tio le, it showed a flat road but you can see the road actually is up and down. There are a lot of runners kept overtaking me at this distance as well as Kimura san overtook me at km 3. Surf thru the net and found the actual elevation map. Wa se I am correct, not a flat road, I think it is last year road elevation map.

Organiser published Road Elevation Map

Map found from other website

1st water station and banana station at 4km, it might be too early to consume all this but en kai si for full marathon runner which overlapping at this road. Started to see runners walking after 7km and I think they are full marathon runner. You can see many mobile toilets were placed along the road for the 1st 10K, good job organiser. Also pai se to the KL motorist, have to give the road to us, I heard yours keep horning in the early morning but bo pan huat, ci ni ci pai, nia car have to give way to pedestrian. 2nd 10k came with few interesting cheering groups to motivate all the runners. 1st time passed thru a tunnel called cooling zone which sprayed water to the runners (Bo rasa leng pun !). Organiser really did a good job on the road distance indication, easy for us to correct our pace for best time. Try to speed up at the last 2km in order to beat my personal best time but paisei last 500m really killed me and hiam hiam made me puntured. I am thinking of walk to the finishing line but my ego keep pushing me and crossed the finishing line with 2 hours 1 minute rank 352 among the man half marathon category and 108 in my (Veteran) category. This is really the Moment of Glory even tough I am unable to hit the time below 2 hours. The first aid area set up after the finishing line really provided a superb job to lessen my leg's pain -free leg massage given.

After the leg massage, with the pain leg, went to collect my medal and a nearly expired rubbing oil, walked back to finishing line to wait for other friends. Finally, all half marathon runner friends returned and decided to go back to KL plaza. Lucky, able to catch a bus back to Bukit Bintang. After lunch, checked out from KL plaza and started our long distance journey again to Penang and reached home at about 6pm.
